We drive eastward from the Costa del Sol to one of the most beautiful white villages in the upper district of the Axarquía. We will explore the narrow, winding streets in the Mudejar suburb and take a coffee break. Frigiliana, a town of some 3000 inhabitants, is to be found in the interior of the eastern-most subregion of Málaga province. Axarquía is located between the Sierra de Almijara and the Mediterranean. The área dates back to the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula.
White villages came into being during epidemics of the 16th to 19th centuries. The houses were whitewashed with slake lime in the hope of protecting against disease.
Later, we drive to Nerja Caves which are among the largest in Europe. After this visit, we continue to Nerja itself, for a walk to the Balcón de Europa. Afterwards, our visitors will have free time and the opportunity to take lunch.
In the afternoon, we visit a mango and avocado plantation and learn from a local farmer. There will be a wonderful mango or avocado tasting opportunity (depending on the season).
